All emotions and feelings have a purpose and are a signal to the body to respond in a certain way. The amygdala is the part of the brain that is responsible for this, and its job as well as every single cell in our body is to keep us alive. The amygdala is the survival part of the brain, which would have kept us alive if we had come face to face with a sabre-toothed tiger over 100 years ago.
It would have activated the fight-or-flight response associated with sensing fear and its purpose is to signal and protect you from potential danger and put you into a state ready to react. The challenge is our brains haven’t caught up with the modern world, and are still the same as that over 100 years ago.
This is one reason why when an event, situation, or circumstance emerges that is out of the ordinary or could be dangerous our fight-or-flight response kicks in to protect us and we feel fear (and other uncomfortable emotions). However, we don’t live in the same world as over 100 years ago with sabre-toothed tigers running around, and dangers and threats around every corner.
In the modern world, we sense fear in different ways from public speaking to having a heart-to-heart conversation with a loved one, or considering leaving a job that we dislike but end up staying because hey it pays the bills and it’s comfortable. All of these examples, make us more comfortable and lead us to rest of our laurels. They contribute to the comfort crisis! Then, one day we wake up and wonder… what the fck am I doing with my life?*
It’s not all your fault. But, it is your responsibility to change it. And, as Robin explains in this episode his approach of Fearless Business which can just as easily be applied to life as a whole isn’t about recklessness; it’s about stepping outside of your comfort zone to do the things you know you need to do to accomplish the goals you want to accomplish so you can live the life you want to live!
It’s about consciously taking control of the fight-or-flight response, processing emotions and feelings in a healthy way and developing the mindset to tackle imposter syndrome and facing fears head-on.
This is what Robin helps business owners with in his coaching practice, Fearless Business. One of the common challenges and fears that he sees and helps clients with on a daily basis is the money mindset and clients being able to charge what they’re worth and feel more confident about the value they bring to the world.
Our money mindset often traces back to our childhood experiences and the language used by our parents. The impact of childhood experiences on one’s relationship with money cannot be underestimated and the inherited beliefs we form can lead to a scarcity money mindset. However, this doesn’t mean that we have to just blindly accept and live with it for our entire lives. Through, conscious personal growth, and self-improvement we can break negative behaviour cycles, as well as change our thoughts, and emotions over time.
Becoming aware of and catching negative thought patterns early is the first step in breaking the cycle. When we become more aware we can subsequently make more better conscious decisions and by doing so, we can avoid reacting on autopilot which often leads us down the paths we don’t want to go!
Being fearless takes courage, and is a mindset to apply to all aspects of life, including health, wealth, happiness, and relationships. While Robin’s focus is on helping business owners, he advises that rather than separating business and life, to see both as life and seek life balance, which can positively impact business endeavours. I believe that this helps with being fearless because you can approach and live your entire life from the same perspective: to be fearless in all that you do!
By being fearless in all that you do, you can create and build your own unique story rather than buying into someone else’s narrative. This includes designing a business and/or career that you enjoy and find fulfilment in, to the ultimate goal of creating a life full of clarity, energy, and vitality where you get to do the things you want to do with the people you want to do them with. It’s time to be fearless, and create our lives by design!
