Health matters. There’s no getting away from it. Without our health, what do we really have? Nothing?
When Health Becomes Your Identity
The challenge is that most people who become health-conscious mix it up with their identity.
Maybe I’ve been guilty of that myself. But one thing I know I’ve been guilty of is approaching health with a serious mindset.
Why?
Because it matters!
Why I Get So Serious About What Matters
One thing I’ve learned about myself is this:
I have a serious mindset when it comes to what matters.
I’m exploring the reasons and beliefs behind it, and I sense it could have something to do with wanting to stay on top of it, not letting myself slip or underplay its importance.
If something matters, we dedicate the time, effort, energy, and investment to it.
And that’s no more true than with our health.
To be the healthiest version of ourselves, dedicating the time, effort, energy, and investment is vital. There’s no getting around it.
A Better Way: The Playful Mindset
As I’ve been learning and realising, though, there’s a better way than being so serious about it all of the time.
This way involves adopting a more playful and fun mindset, one rooted in possibility and joy. Interestingly, the science backs this up: research shows that play reduces stress and lifts well-being, and adults benefit from it as much as children do. What makes something playful isn’t the activity itself, but the mindset behind it: curiosity, openness, and lightness.
Staying Playful Through the Tough Moments
That’s not to say there won’t be ups and downs. Challenges and tough moments. But that’s exactly when it’s even more important to embrace this mindset. Learning to feel good more often without avoiding the hard stuff is a big part of it.
To realise that we’re experiencing this or that challenge, this or that tough moment, for the very fact that we’re alive and experiencing it can make us stronger.
It requires a totally different mindset. And by no means am I there yet. It’s something I think about often and am striving towards.
It’s part of my journey of becoming less serious and more joyful and playful, while not underplaying the importance of what matters, and in this context, that’s our health!
