There’s a famous old saying that goes, “Let go of the old to make room for the new”, and the more I go through life, the more I believe it to be true.

Like, how can we expect new things to come into our lives, whether that’s new relationships, new experiences, new opportunities, or material wealth, if we keep holding onto everything?

My Twice-a-Year Clear-Out (and the 3-Month Rule)

This is why I do a massive clear-out at least twice a year. I go through all of my personal belongings, and if I haven’t used them in the last 3 months, or don’t think I’ll use them in the next 3 months, I get rid of them.

I get rid of them by selling, donating, or throwing them away (often through recyclable means where I can) so I can make way for the new.

I must say, every time I do this, I feel more spacious and relaxed. It’s one habit I use to lead a more minimalistic lifestyle, and it turns out there’s science behind that feeling: research links clutter to higher stress and a lower mood, while clearing it can reduce stress and restore a sense of calm and control.

Do We Really Need All This Stuff?

Sure, personal belongings and material wealth feel nice. But do we really need half of the stuff we own?

I’ve found, from my own experience, that probably not, and having too much stuff just weighs us down. Again, I’m talking from personal experience, so maybe you feel differently. But so often I see people hang onto things they haven’t used, and won’t use, in the coming months. It’s really the physical version of the idea that simplicity beats complexity every single time.

Keep Only What Truly Matters

Now, I’m all for keeping belongings that mean something to us. But only the deep stuff, the things that really do mean something. And I think, more often than not, that’s only going to be a few things.

I’m sharing this with you today because I’m due for a clear-out. June is upon us, and it’s time to go through all of my personal belongings and get rid of anything that doesn’t serve me anymore!

I’ve found this makes way for the new.

I don’t know what the ‘new’ is yet. But I trust it’ll make its way into my life in due course.

So my suggestion to you is toโ€ฆ try itโ€ฆ

Your Turn: Have a Clear-Out This Month

Go through your personal belongings over the next month and have a clear-out. If my “3-month rule” is too short a time period for you, no problem. Clear out anything you haven’t used in the past year or 18 months. You choose.

The main focus here is to let go of the old. To let go of old energy, one way I’ve found to do that is to have a clear-out of the “stuff” we accumulate!

Plus, if you decide to sell anything, you’ll make a few bucks too. A win-win, don’t you think?!

Key Takeaways on Letting Go of the Old

  1. Declutter Regularly: Clearing out items you have not used in three months creates space for fresh energy and new opportunities.
  2. Reduce Stress Naturally: Scientific evidence shows physical clutter increases stress, while decluttering restores calm and a feeling of control.
  3. Keep What Truly Matters: Hold onto physical possessions that carry deep sentimental value, but let go of extra items that weigh you down.
