When we expect the unexpected, we’re open to everything that comes our way, for good or for bad; who knows?
What Surrender (or Allowance) Really Means
This feeds into the art of surrender. Some refer to it as allowance.
When we surrender, or are in a state of allowance, there’s no judgment. There’s just pure consciousness and acceptance of what is. In many ways, this is the heart of navigating pain without getting stuck in it, accepting what’s here rather than fighting it.
Since my hospital visit a couple of weeks ago (at the time of writing), I’ve been consciously aiming to live from this place more often than not.
Sure, I’ve had the odd wobble.
The Wobble: Emotional Contagion
Interestingly, these have mostly come when I’ve found myself getting caught up in emotional contagion, which is when we catch other people’s emotions, either through one-to-one interactions or as part of a larger social group! It’s a well-documented phenomenon: we automatically mimic and synchronise with the moods of those around us, often without even realising.
How Self-Awareness Catches the Spiral
That’s why (well, at least one reason why) self-awareness, and awareness in general, are so important. Through self-awareness, we’re able to catch ourselves entering the spiral of emotional contagion and to do something about it before it catches its jaws around us and it’s too late!
It All Comes Down to Consciousness
To be honest, this is all one big game of consciousness. Don’t you think?
Whether it’s surrender, allowance, self-awareness, or anything else, it all boils down to one core thing: consciousness. And the art and science of what it means to live consciously!
Think about it, and let me know what insights you come to.
Key Takeaways on The Art of Surrender
- Surrender: Surrender means dropping judgment and accepting what happens right now. You drop the fight against pain and stay open to whatever comes your way.
- Managing Emotional Contagion: You naturally absorb the moods of people around you. Recognising these emotional wobbles keeps you from picking up stress that is not yours.
- Building Self-Awareness: Self-awareness stops negative emotional spirals early. Catching your feelings in the moment gives you control back before bad moods take over.
- Living Consciously: Life is a continuous game of consciousness. One where you can discover how intentional awareness shapes your daily experience.
